Optimists are volunteers who are dedicated to "Bringing Out the Best in Kids" in their communities. Throughout the Lower Mainland Optimists sponsor such youth activities as Junior Golf, Junior Curling, a Youth Talent Showcase, a Soapbox Derby, and others. Abbotsford Optimists are volunteers who are interested in making our community a better place by sponsoring community programs for, and working with, the youth of Abbotsford. We were organized 1985, and were sponsored by the Evening Optimist Club of Coquitlam, B.C. Since that time, Abbotsford Optimist Volunteers have helped the youth of Abbotsford grow up with a sense of community and involvement, by sponsoring many different projects. Although we have many projects and do a lot of community service work, we are not "all work and no play". Social functions are an important part of our organization and volunteers often get together for golf, fishing, birthday parties or just a "cuppa coffee". These events are not confined to just our own club but are also held in conjunction with other clubs in the lower mainland, Washington, Oregon, Idaho and sometimes Alaska. The highlight of our Optimist year is our annual convention, last held in August, 2007 in Eugene, Oregon.
We are not a business networking club, per se, but members often do business with each other. Our club has members from many walks of life including insurance, travel, education, security and others.
Being associated with other volunteers is a rewarding experience not only from a community service point of view but also from a social and business viewpoint as well.
We meet on the 1st and 3rd Tuesday of each month at the M.S.A. Museum on Tretheway St. and guests are always welcome. Please send us an e mail if you would like to attend. Our Board of Directors (Club members only) meets on the 4th Tuesday of each month.
